Mysore Dasara Significance:

The city of Mysore gets its name from the demon Mahishasura. The festival of Vijayadashami marks the victory of good over evil as Goddess Chamundeshwari defeated and killed Mahishasura to end his tyrannical reign. She killed the buffalo-headed monster on the Chamundi Hill and thereafter resided there. The city and the hill still retain their names. During the 15th century, Dasara celebrations reached its zenith under the patronage of Vijayanagara kings. Even after their fall, the Wodeyars of Mysore preserved the tradition. Raja Wodeyar I held an elaborate celebration of Mysore Dasara in 1610 at Srirangapatnam.

The celebration of Mysore Dasara:

The celebrations of Mysore Dasara begin on the sixth day of Navratra which is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. The eighth day is held in honor of Goddess Durga and on a ninth day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. During the festival, each nook and corner of the city is thoroughly decorated and the calm life of the city is replaced by festivities and merrymaking on every street. The celebrations begin with the Royal couple from the Wodeyar family worshipping and performing special rituals to please Goddess Chamundeshwari. The ‘puja’ is conducted in Chamundi temple, situated atop the
Chamundi Hill.

A special ‘durbar’ is also held at the Mysore Palace which is attended by select members of the Wodeyar family and special invitees. A special ceremony is held during which the king, Royal Highness Srikantadatta Narsimharaja ascend 7 steps to the elaborately decorated throne in his traditional attire. As part of the celebrations, the Mysore Palace is illuminated on each of the 10 days of Mysore Dasara and several cultural events to showcase the culture of Karnataka are held in front of the palace. The palace remains open to the masses during the festival.

The Karnataka State Government organizes several acts, music, folk dance, flower, film, and food competitions. A major attraction is the wrestling tournament held at Devraj Urs Stadium which is attended by renowned wrestlers from all parts of India. Another highlight of the festivities is the beginning of the Dasara exhibition in Doddakere Maidan which lasts for around two months.

The grand finale of Mysore Dasara celebrations is the Vijayadashmi procession called the “Jumbo Safari” which is held on Mysore’s streets. An idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari graces the streets, placed on a golden “mandapa” over a decorated elephant. The Goddess is worshipped by the Royal couple and then the procession begins from the Mysore Palace. The festival culminates with a spectacular show of fireworks.

Dussehra Celebrations 2018 – Vijayadashami 2018

Dussehra Celebrations 2018 – Vijayadashami 2018
Happy Dussehra Celebrations 2018 – Vijayadashami 2018

Dussehra celebrations are dedicated in that day when 'Lord Rama' defeated demon Ravana. On this very day (In the Past), Lord Rama successfully was able to diminish the stature of Ravana on the earth, thus freeing it from the cruel practices of this demon. As this day is too auspicious on which win of good over bad took place, it is certainly a day to be celebrated. And after killing, Lord Rama met with her wife Devi Sita after a long time as Ravana with help of wrong deeds, took her away from Lord Rama. On this very day, Lord Rama decided to go back to their home, Ayodhya, which they have not visited for the past 14 years, as they were in exile. Read one story related to Dussehra in one of our articles. Dussehra is also called as Vijayadashmi with other names.

Now coming to the celebrations, we can say that this day marks the beginning of one month in which people following the Hindu religion indulge in massive celebrations. And why they shouldn’t be after all this is the major festival in India in the whole year. But Dussehra is not only limited to India, but also to the whole world.

One very common practice during this time is burning of effigies of Demon Ravana, Meghnath (Son of Ravana) and Kumbh Karan (brother of Ravana). All sorts of preparation for this day start from around 1 month before. Long statue of these three with help of paper and bamboo sticks are made, and crackers are fitted inside them. No plastic or other stuff is used in this, only biodegradable material. On the day of Dussehra, they are set on fire.

But in Dusshera's India there is a different way of celebration While whole north India does, what is told above, in other parts of India, let’s say south they have other functions on this day. In states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, they consider this day auspicious for starting education and called as Vidya aarambham. In the state of Karnataka, huge celebrations and possession are carried out on street. On the other hand in West Bengal, this marks the end of the 9 days ‘Durga Puja’. During this day, after the final prayers, Maa Durga is immersed in water, and it is like a warm goodbye to the goddesses. So West Bengal is itself submerged in celebrations of this day. We can see that celebrations are different but all have joy and happiness inside it.

One thing which is of utmost importance and favorite among the all the age groups is to see Ramlila. Ramlila is a type of show which is carried that depicts the total story of Ramayana. It can be professional one also, and the crowd that turns out to see this is really something that anybody can’t miss. Special decoration and arrangement are done in order to provide people with the great experience of seeing it.

On the day Dussehra, people usually go to see ‘Mela’ (Fair) and then begins the fun. Different rides, eating sweets-chats-Pani puri, talks etc are quite the part of these celebrations. People make different dishes on this day at their home too. Some of them are ‘Jalebi’ (Sweet), Burfi (Sweet) etc. And every region of India has the different way of making these dishes. Since this day, it is a national holiday, people tend to celebrate it more. A family reunion etc is quite a common scene to be seen.

Happy Dussehra celebrations in the year 2017 were on 30th September.
Happy Dussehra celebrations 2018 in the year 2018 will be on 19th October.

Happy Dussehra 2018 Celebrations: Legends of Dussehra

According to the Ramayana, this colorful festival is celebrated to mark the death of King Ravana who was a demon and had abducted Sita, the wife of Lord Rama. Lord Rama, who is the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu was the son of King Dasaratha. He went to 14 years of exile with his wife Sita and brother Laxman where his wife was kidnapped by Ravana.

In order to get his wife back, Lord Rama attacked Lanka along with Hanuman and others. King Ravana was killed during the battle and this how Lord Rama was able to rescue his wife. The day when Ravana died was important and was the tenth day of the battle. That is why this festival is known as Dussehra which means cutting ten heads of the devil. The festival also signifies the victory of good over the bad which is the main message of this festival.

Legend of Goddess Durga: Happy Dussehra 2018

Another very important tale associated with this festival is of Goddess Durga. In the ancient times when people were tired of the tortures of Mahishasura, an evil demon all the Gods collected their energies and gave birth to Goddess Durga. In order to put an end to all the problems, Goddess Durga engaged in a battle which lasted for nine days. On the 10th day, demon Mahishasura was killed and people were relieved from his torture. In southern India, this festival is celebrated with lots of joy and fun as Mahishasura was the native resident of Mysore, Karnataka.

Though there are different legends of this festival, the joy and enthusiasm among people are must to be watched. Everywhere people are waiting for the effigy to be burnt so that they can celebrate the festival. It is one of the greatest Hindu festivals that is celebrated all over India.

Dussehra Legends – Vijayadashami 2018 | Dussehra 2018

This article discusses those events that unfolded which lead to the celebrations of Dussehra. This day is celebrated with the two major reasons behind it. As we know that Dussehra is also called Vijayadashmi, because on this very day, Goddesses Durga defeated and killed demon Mahishasur who was creating troubles in heaven and on earth, so this is one reason for this. Secondly, Lord Rama Killed demon Ravana on this very day.

Now the story behind this is as follows. King Dashrath had 4 sons, and they got married to four daughters of King Janak. Among the four sons he had, Lord Rama was among the elder one. But as the saying goes ‘Human mind is never stable’, so it does happen here also. King Dashrath was getting old, so he wanted to give all his responsibilities to his elder son Lord Rama. But Kaikye (Stepmother of Lord Rama) was not justified with this act of her Swami (husband) as she wanted his son Bharath to be the king. But initially she was also happy with her Swami (husband) decisions to make Rama king, and she used to love Rama more than Bharath, but then her own helper known as Manthra, brainwashed her mind and put into his mind, that Bharath won’t get anything in the end.

This manipulation of Kaikye mind led to asking of her two promises that King Dashrath held to her. In these two promises, she demanded, making of Bharath as a king and putting lord Rama into 14 years of Exile. Lord Rama accepted this move with happiness and he was happy to see Bharath being the king. Meanwhile, Bharath was not present at this time in Ayodhya, he was in his grandparent's house. So lord Ram with his wife Mata Sita changed their attire like of saints and then started to move towards the forest. Also when they were about to leave, his younger Laxman, decided not to live in the house and urged to join the elder brother of his services towards him. Three of them left their kingdom and started living in the forest. Father of Lord Rama, King Dashrath passed away as he was not able to bear the pain of seeing his son leaving his home.

When Bharath came to know about this, he was totally shattered hearing this and was angry at his mother about her this heinous act. Bharath soon decided to callback his brother and went on the journey for the same. As he reached he asked Lord Rama to come back. He also gave news to Lord Ram about the passing of their father, hearing that left Lord Rama totally in grief and sorrow. But he refused to come back as he told that, he would abide by the word of his mother to serve the exile for 14 years. But Bharath took the steps of Lord Rama and told that they will be placed on the seat of the king until he returns from the exile.

But during the exile, one-day Demon Ravana used his power of changing forms and took away Ma Sita to a place called as ‘Lanka’, by deception. When Lord Rama and Laxman came back from the hunt of deer (Deer was sent by Ravana), they did not found Ma Sita in the hut. So the search for Ma Sita began. After months of searching, they came to know that Ravana took Maa Sita to Lanka. During this searching, Lord Rama met with various people like Lord Hanuman, Sugrib, and many other people. Even after telling Ravana to leave Ma Sita, and he will be spared, he did not agree upon this and Lord Rama finally decided to kill him.

A fierce battle took place and both of the sides lost people. Laxman was once badly hurt by Meghnath and to cure him, Lord Hanuman brought a whole mountain from the Himalayas that was full of curing herbs. Finally, Ravana was left alone and Lord Rama used his arrow to kill Ravana.

So to celebrate this joyful day of triumph of good over evil, Dussehra is celebrated. A detailed story about this event can be read In the Holy book called as ‘Ramayana’
