During nine days, devotees fast and worship the forms of nine manifestations or Goddess Durga, also known as Shakti. Each day there is a special significance, and a form of the Goddess is worshipped. Every day a colour, and a planet is also attached to the body.

This is a festive season and people all over India are ready to celebrate many important festivals this month. Starting from Navaratri, the largest festival of India is celebrated by the Hindus, it is celebrated with great admiration and devotion for nine nights and 10 days. Although there are four seasonal Navaratri, two are widely celebrated, which is known as Chaitra Navaratri, seen in March / April, which is known as Sharad Navaratri, which is celebrated in September / October. This year the festival starts on October 10 and ends on October 19th.

It is celebrated for various reasons and is celebrated differently in different parts of India and there are many parallel histories associated with it. But mostly, it is believed that at this time Goddess Durga destroyed Mahishasura, buffalo monster that shows evil and arrogance. The history of Ramayana is also associated with the festival because it was on the day of Dasami, one day after Navaratri was over, Lord Rama had killed Ravana.

Sharad Navaratri or Autumn Navaratri is celebrated in the moon month of Ashwin according to Hindu calendar. Each day there is a special significance, and a form of the Goddess is worshipped. Every day a colour, and a planet is also attached to the body.

Day 1 (Wed, 10 Oct, Pratipada)

The first day also Known as Pratipada, Shailputri is worshipped on this day. Goddess Parvati is the daughter of the Himalayas. In Sanskrit, Shell means the mountain and thus it is also known as Shailputri. In this form, Goddess rides a bull, a trident in his right hand and takes lotus in the left hand.

Day 2 (Thu, 11 Oct, Diwtiya)

On Diwtiya, Goddess Brahmacharini is worshipped. Here the goddess walks barefoot and a goat can be seen and a commando can be seen in his hands. In this shape, Parvati turned into an extraordinary sati and her unmarried soul is worshipped as Brahmachari.

Day 3 (Fri, 12 Oct, Tritiya)

Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped on Tritya. This name is gotten from the way that in the wake of wedding Lord Shiva, he began half (moon) on his forehead.  Here the goddess has 10 days and rides the tiger.

Day 4 (Sat, 13 Oct, Chaturthi)

Goddess Kushmand is worshipped on Chaturthi. Also known as the creator of the universe, Kushmanda is also known as Goddess, which has the power and ability to stay inside the sun. Here he has eight hands and sitting on the lion.




Day 5 ( Mon, 14 Oct, Panchami)

Goddess Skandamata is worshipped on Panchami. The mother of Skandamata or Skanda is also called Lord Kartikeya and with a child, she rides a cruel lion in her own hands. The goddess has four hands.


Day 6 (Tue, 15 Oct, Sasthi)

Devi Katayani is honoured on the Sasthi. She also known as the warrior goddess, it is viewed as a standout amongst the most vicious types of Goddess Parvati. The name was destined to the wise (sage) Katya.

Day 7 (Wed, 16 Oct, Saptami)

On Saptami, the goddess Kalratri is worshipped. Legends say that he passes in the colour of his skin and embraces a dark colour in the form of a black colour to kill monsters to auspicious and nishumbha. He has four hands in a donkey ride.


Day 8 (Thus, 17 Oct, Durga Ashtami | Maha Navmi)

This day is known as Ashtami Mata Mahagauri. Mahagauri means very white (Mahaka meaning great and meaning of Gauri is white) Naam is derived from the fact that Parvati had a fair color, here she rides a bull and has four hands.


Day 9 (Fri, 18 Oct, Maha Navmi)

The last day of the festival is also known as Navami, people pray to Goddess Siddhidathri. Sitting on a lotus, he is believed to pass and pass on all kinds of accomplishments. Here he has four hands.
