According to the Ramayana, this colorful festival is celebrated to mark the death of King Ravana who was a demon and had abducted Sita, the wife of Lord Rama. Lord Rama, who is the 7th avatar of Lord Vishnu was the son of King Dasaratha. He went to 14 years of exile with his wife Sita and brother Laxman where his wife was kidnapped by Ravana.

In order to get his wife back, Lord Rama attacked Lanka along with Hanuman and others. King Ravana was killed during the battle and this how Lord Rama was able to rescue his wife. The day when Ravana died was important and was the tenth day of the battle. That is why this festival is known as Dussehra which means cutting ten heads of the devil. The festival also signifies the victory of good over the bad which is the main message of this festival.

Dussehra Legends – Vijayadashami 2018 | Dussehra 2018

This article discusses those events that unfolded which lead to the celebrations of Dussehra. This day is celebrated with the two major reasons behind it. As we know that Dussehra is also called Vijayadashmi, because on this very day, Goddesses Durga defeated and killed demon Mahishasur who was creating troubles in heaven and on earth, so this is one reason for this. Secondly, Lord Rama Killed demon Ravana on this very day.

Now the story behind this is as follows. King Dashrath had 4 sons, and they got married to four daughters of King Janak. Among the four sons he had, Lord Rama was among the elder one. But as the saying goes ‘Human mind is never stable’, so it does happen here also. King Dashrath was getting old, so he wanted to give all his responsibilities to his elder son Lord Rama. But Kaikye (Stepmother of Lord Rama) was not justified with this act of her Swami (husband) as she wanted his son Bharath to be the king. But initially she was also happy with her Swami (husband) decisions to make Rama king, and she used to love Rama more than Bharath, but then her own helper known as Manthra, brainwashed her mind and put into his mind, that Bharath won’t get anything in the end.

This manipulation of Kaikye mind led to asking of her two promises that King Dashrath held to her. In these two promises, she demanded, making of Bharath as a king and putting lord Rama into 14 years of Exile. Lord Rama accepted this move with happiness and he was happy to see Bharath being the king. Meanwhile, Bharath was not present at this time in Ayodhya, he was in his grandparent's house. So lord Ram with his wife Mata Sita changed their attire like of saints and then started to move towards the forest. Also when they were about to leave, his younger Laxman, decided not to live in the house and urged to join the elder brother of his services towards him. Three of them left their kingdom and started living in the forest. Father of Lord Rama, King Dashrath passed away as he was not able to bear the pain of seeing his son leaving his home.

When Bharath came to know about this, he was totally shattered hearing this and was angry at his mother about her this heinous act. Bharath soon decided to callback his brother and went on the journey for the same. As he reached he asked Lord Rama to come back. He also gave news to Lord Ram about the passing of their father, hearing that left Lord Rama totally in grief and sorrow. But he refused to come back as he told that, he would abide by the word of his mother to serve the exile for 14 years. But Bharath took the steps of Lord Rama and told that they will be placed on the seat of the king until he returns from the exile.

But during the exile, one-day Demon Ravana used his power of changing forms and took away Ma Sita to a place called as ‘Lanka’, by deception. When Lord Rama and Laxman came back from the hunt of deer (Deer was sent by Ravana), they did not found Ma Sita in the hut. So the search for Ma Sita began. After months of searching, they came to know that Ravana took Maa Sita to Lanka. During this searching, Lord Rama met with various people like Lord Hanuman, Sugrib, and many other people. Even after telling Ravana to leave Ma Sita, and he will be spared, he did not agree upon this and Lord Rama finally decided to kill him.

A fierce battle took place and both of the sides lost people. Laxman was once badly hurt by Meghnath and to cure him, Lord Hanuman brought a whole mountain from the Himalayas that was full of curing herbs. Finally, Ravana was left alone and Lord Rama used his arrow to kill Ravana.

So to celebrate this joyful day of triumph of good over evil, Dussehra is celebrated. A detailed story about this event can be read In the Holy book called as ‘Ramayana’
