To end his dictatorship, all the Gods coalesced their energy to form a divine force of supreme energy, Goddess Durga. Adorned with 10 hands and 10 weapons, she rode on a lion and killed Mahishasura to restore balance to the Earth. Every year, people celebrate Dussehra to commemorate the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura as well. It is also said that Ma Durga defeated the demon Mahishasur on this day, hence on the 10th day of 9 days, long Maha Navaratri ends on it. Idols of Maa Durga are immersed in water also called as Visarjan. In different states of India, celebrating Dussehra festival is having different ways for it, but the unique thing is that fun and happiness are common to all and that is what defines this festival.

The festival also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over a buffalo demon Mahishasura. Goddess chased 9 nights and 10 days before killing him on the 10th day. That is why it is called Vijaydashmi which literally means victory on the 10th day. Navratri vrat are also taken by women in North India which end on Ashtami or Navami by them. On this day 9 girls (little) are fed as they are believed to be 9 incarnations of Goddess Durga.
